2013 BMW X5: problems, recalls and what it’s worth
Known weak spot on this generation: N63 4.4L twin-turbo — oil consumption, seals, turbos. 6 recall campaigns to confirm with a dealer.
Blue smoke on cold start, oil level, records of a valve-stem-seal or turbo job, and whether the Customer Care rework was done.
Known problems on the 2013 BMW X5
N63 4.4L twin-turbo — oil consumption, seals, turbos $3,000–$9,000 to fix
The first N63 4.4TT drinks oil (a quart per ~750–1,200 mi), cooks valve-stem seals (blue smoke on start), and wears out turbos, the battery, and coolant transfer lines early. BMW ran an 'N63 Customer Care' campaign that replaced many components.
Check for: Blue smoke on cold start, oil level, records of a valve-stem-seal or turbo job, and whether the Customer Care rework was done.
Basis: BMW N63 Customer Care Package (SIB); NHTSA complaints
Cooling system & oil-leak gaskets (N51/N52/N55 era) $500–$2,000 to fix
Even the more robust inline-sixes of this era shed coolant (plastic expansion tank, water pump, thermostat) and weep oil from the oil-filter-housing gasket, valve-cover gasket, and oil-pan gasket. Individually cheap, collectively a recon line.
Check for: Coolant level and any staining under the front of the car; oil on the exhaust manifold (filter-housing gasket). Ask what cooling parts have been replaced and when.
Basis: Widespread NHTSA complaints; BMW TSBs; standard maintenance history for the era
Known patterns for this year and model, not findings about one car. A well-kept example may already have had the fix. Costs are rough US shop prices.
