We use your state’s own rules: its rate, whether a trade-in lowers the tax, whether private sales are taxed, and any caps (like South Carolina’s $500). Every rate was checked on the state’s official site on Sep 24, 2026.

Local tax and DMV fees depend on your address, so you add those. Where a state has no simple formula (DC, Illinois private sales) we send you to the state’s own tool. Confirm with your DMV before you pay.
