2014 Chevrolet Tahoe: problems, recalls and what it’s worth
NHTSA has 1 open defect investigation (not a recall). Known weak spot on this generation: 5.3L V8 AFM — lifter failure & oil consumption. 3 recall campaigns to confirm with a dealer.
Listen for a top-end tick at idle, scan for misfire/cam-position codes, check oil consumption. An AFM-delete or a lifter/cam job on record changes the picture.
Known problems on the 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe
5.3L V8 AFM — lifter failure & oil consumption $1,500–$4,500 to fix
The 5.3L with Active Fuel Management collapses AFM lifters (ticking, misfire, a wiped cam) and burns oil past the AFM pressure-relief valve and valve-cover PCV. Extremely common on this generation.
Check for: Listen for a top-end tick at idle, scan for misfire/cam-position codes, check oil consumption. An AFM-delete or a lifter/cam job on record changes the picture.
Basis: Widespread NHTSA complaints; GM TSBs; well-documented
Known patterns for this year and model, not findings about one car. A well-kept example may already have had the fix. Costs are rough US shop prices.
