Known problems on the 2010 Ford Mustang
5.4L 3-valve Triton — spark plugs, cam phasers, timing $1,000–$3,500 to fix
The 3V 5.4L breaks spark plugs on removal (a two-piece design) or spits them from stripped threads, rattles its cam phasers, and wears timing components — a big top-end job when it goes.
Check for: A diesel-like cold-start rattle (phasers/timing), any misfire codes, and whether the plugs were ever done (and how it went).
Basis: Ford TSBs; NHTSA complaints; widely-documented
Known patterns for this year and model, not findings about one car. A well-kept example may already have had the fix. Costs are rough US shop prices.
